Single-use plastic plates, cutlery, expanded and extruded polystyrene cups together with food and beverage containers could all be phased out in the latest UK Government bid to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste.
Estimates point to 1.1 billion single use plastic plates and an astronomic 4.25 billion items of single use cutlery most of which are plastic are used ever year.
The UK uses 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups each year, that is a staggering amount, nearly 7 million every day.
We have already done the hard work by setting the precedent of banning products namely cotton buds, plastic straws and stirrers we can only hope this move keeps momentum towards sensible measures effectively forcing the arm of the public to change their ways.
Harsh? Perhaps but without regulation we ran headfirst into this mess, what makes us believe we will simply stop this epidemic of plastic if we do nothing?
The huge success of the 5p carrier bag charge which cut consumption by an estimated 95% since 2015 shows us when pushed we tend to react, there is still a lot of inertia over single use coffee cups but the benefits of reusable cups is many fold. The obvious waste reduction is a feel good factor enough but with the latest range of cups by FOSH they are fully insulated keeping coffee hot right till the last drop making coffee last longer, more time to enjoy with a friend or in most cases talk on the phone whilst your coffee awaits you.
Unnecessary plastic is certainly the issue of our times, one day people will look back on these years with horror, it is our job to see the problem, take bold moves to stop the progression and in the end make the world a sustainable planet for our future residents, why don’t you join us?

We ask how much plastic waste is too much?
